Eclipse trick – drag projects onto a server in Servers view to deploy them

What a refreshing experience! While running a workshop about Java EE 5 development with IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) 8.0.1 and IBM WebSphere Application Server V7 I stumbled upon a feature of RAD I had not even imagined might exist – it’s possible to deploy a EAR file/project in RAD onto WAS7 as simply as dragging it onto a server in the Servers view. And it even works in a “bare” Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers!

It’s simple as it sounds. Create a dynamic web project and drag it onto a server.

Once the project is over the server, it gets highlighted.

Release the mouse button and the project is deployed.

No special key combination and quite intuitive. It scares me though that it wasn’t such before.

p.s. Check it out with two or more deployable projects. That’s the trick!

One Response to Eclipse trick – drag projects onto a server in Servers view to deploy them

My 2 cents – you can do the same in WebSphere Message Broker toolkit (from version 7) – just drag and drop your flow to an execution group of your choice.
